When shopping for an off-the-rack wedding gown, sizing will work differently than it normally does. This is something that brides are often surprised by, but it is also something that is quick and easy to not only learn but adjust to while trying on off-the-rack wedding gowns in Illinois.
The Altar Bridal, located in Barrington, is Illinois’ largest off-the-rack bridal boutique. Our inventory consists of over 1,000 dresses in sizes 0 through 30 and at a variety of budget-friendly price points. Every bride who walks through our doors has so many options of what gowns they would like to see themselves in. Every bride also tries on a variety of sizes, broadening their options even more.

What Size am I in Bridal Gowns?
When you are trying on off-the-rack wedding gowns, it is important to try on true-to-size wedding gowns. This gives you the best and closest idea to what your wedding gown will look like on your most special day. How do you know what size you are in off-the-rack bridal gowns? Your Altar Bridal stylist will ask you what your typical jean and bra sizes are. Based on the bride’s answer, your stylist will let you know what size off-the-rack bridal gowns you will be shopping for.
It is important to remember that when you are trying on off-the-rack bridal gowns, that wedding gowns almost always run small. It is also important to remember that you will be trying on a range of sizes. So, your bridal stylist will start by sizing up a size or two and let you know your bridal size range. For example, if you are a pant size 8, you will be shopping for off-the-rack wedding gowns in sizes 10, 12, and 14. Now, this may sound strange and very different than what you usually are trying on, but always remember that bridal gowns are built very differently and can always be altered.
What Makes Bridal Sizing Different?
Many factors contribute to off-the-rack wedding gowns in Illinois running differently in sizing compared to our regular clothes. One of the main factors is that almost every gown is in European sizing, which is traditionally smaller than American sizing. For example, if a size 18 in European sizing fits you very well, then it is likely that a size 16 in American sizing will also fit you very well.

Another factor as to why off-the-rack wedding gowns in Illinois are sized differently is because of fabric. Some fabrics, such as tulle, lace, and crepe have good amounts of stretch and give to them. While other materials such as satin, mikado, and organza are much more structured and do not have nearly as much natural stretch or give. For example, because of the material, a size 12 crepe dress may fit you perfectly, but in a structured mikado, the size 14 fits you perfectly.
If you have any questions about the size, fit, or material of an off-the-rack wedding gown that you are trying on, simply ask your stylist and they will have an answer for you! Our team is extremely knowledgeable about bridal sizing and how confusing it can often be.
